Ted Lasso arrived at just the right time. For many, 2020 felt like an endless string of days, caught in an endless string of bad news. Plenty of surprises landed on that year's bingo cards, but a moustachioed U.S. football coach navigating British soccer wasn't one of them. This wasn't the show anyone expected, but that's exactly why it worked. It struck a chord with the most unlikely of audiences - skeptics, cynics, even West Ham supporters! It spoke to those who didn't see themselves in typical 'feel-good' narratives, and taught them to once again BELIEVE. Sadly, the series waded too deep into its melodramatic subplots to ultimately distract from the central themes. But still, Ted Lasso managed what few shows could: it made sincerity feel radical. It cut through the noise, giving people permission to embrace vulnerability, trust, and a good laugh when it was needed most.
